Field photography · Commissions open

Light that only turns up once, documented properly.

I work slowly and travel light — coastlines, high ground and the working places between them, photographed across whole weather systems rather than a single booked afternoon.

How I work

Method

A forecast, a long drive and the patience to wait for the second light.

Most of the work happens before the camera comes out. I read the forecast against tide tables and sun angles, pick two or three viable positions, then give each one enough time to actually happen.

The kit stays small on purpose: one body, three primes, a tripod that survives wind, and filters instead of a lighting van. It means I can walk in where a crew cannot, and it means a brief can change at six in the morning without costing anybody a day.

Everything is shot on a calibrated profile and graded in a single consistent pass, so a set photographed across three counties and two seasons still reads as one body of work when it lands in a magazine spread or on a wall.

“I would rather come back with eleven frames that belong together than four hundred that only prove I was standing there.”

Collections

Five sets from the current field years.

Each set is shot over repeat visits. Captions note the region, the season and the format the files were finished for.

Commissions

Four ways the work usually gets booked.

Scope, time in the field and usage are agreed in writing before the first drive. If your project sits between two of these, the closest lane is a fine starting point.

01

Editorial feature

A commissioned story for a magazine, journal or long-form online feature — scouted, shot and sequenced to run as a spread rather than a single hero frame.

  • Route scouting
  • Two to four field days
  • Sequenced edit
  • Captions and shot log
In the field
2–4 days, weather-flexible
Delivery
25–40 graded frames, 3 weeks
Usage
Print issue plus matching online feature

02

Brand field work

Outdoor and place-led imagery for a brand that needs its own landscape library instead of stock — product in situ, people working, and the ground it all happens on.

  • Shot list workshop
  • On-location direction
  • Vertical and horizontal crops
  • Web and print exports
In the field
1–3 days per location
Delivery
60–120 frames, 3–4 weeks
Usage
Campaign term agreed per project

03

Print archive & licensing

Licensing from existing sets, or a new commission finished specifically for wall output — sized, sharpened and soft-proofed for the paper it will actually be printed on.

  • Set selection
  • Paper soft-proofing
  • Master files to size
  • Edition numbering
In the field
Not required for licensing
Delivery
Masters within 10 working days
Usage
Single site, interior or edition run

04

Private expedition

I travel with a small group or a single party and photograph the journey properly — useful for first ascents, long crossings, research trips and family route traditions.

  • Pre-trip planning call
  • Self-sufficient in the field
  • Daily rough selects
  • Final film-style edit
In the field
4–14 days, travel included
Delivery
Full archive plus 40-frame edit
Usage
Personal, with press use on request

Booking

How a commission actually runs.

Four stages, no surprises. You will know the plan, the weather contingency and the delivery date before anything is confirmed.

01

Brief and window

We agree what the images are for, where they will run, and a two-week window rather than one fixed day — that flexibility is what makes the light possible.

02

Scout and schedule

I check access, tide and sun angles, then send a short plan with positions, timings and the fallback locations if the forecast turns.

03

Field days

Dawn and dusk are the working hours. You get rough selects at the end of each day so the direction can be adjusted while I am still on site.

04

Edit and hand-over

One consistent grading pass, then the graded set, print masters and the shot log, with a review round for sequencing before files are final.

Questions

The things clients ask before booking.

If something here is not covered, put it in the brief box and it will be answered directly.

What happens if the weather ruins the shoot dates?
Commissions are booked as a window, not a day. Inside that window I choose the working mornings from the forecast and keep an inland fallback for flat light or high wind. If a whole window closes, it rolls to the next one at no extra fee — only genuine re-travel costs are shared.
How far will you travel for a commission?
Regional work is routine and overseas work is welcome where the schedule allows. Travel, access permits and nights away are quoted as a transparent line, separate from the shoot fee, so you can see exactly what the journey costs.
What usage rights do I get with the files?
Each quote names the media, territory and term in plain language — for example one print issue plus matching online feature, or a twelve-month brand campaign. Extending later is a simple written amendment rather than a new shoot.
Can I have the raw files as well as the edit?
The delivered archive is the graded set, because the grade is part of the work. Raw files can be released where a project genuinely needs them — research documentation or in-house retouching — as a named clause in the agreement.
How long is the turnaround after the last field day?
Rough selects reach you at the end of each shooting day. Graded sets follow in about three weeks for editorial and three to four for larger brand libraries. A single urgent frame can be pulled forward on request.
Do you supply finished prints or only the files?
Both. Files are soft-proofed to the paper you intend to use, and finished prints can be produced and numbered for an edition. Tell me the final size and viewing distance early, as that occasionally changes how a frame is composed.
